Mad Max Review

At its core, Mad Max is a game about the death of hope. It’s about learning to find something to cling to in a pointless existence of murder and regret, and then watching it turn to ash in your hands. But that kernel of anguish is buried deep down in an adventure that demands to be explored through sheepish smiles and wide-eyed amazement as each combustive, sickening, and awesome moment of Max’s warpath consumes every foot of wasteland.

But for Max, the reluctant hero, the wasteland is something to escape. He’s lost his car and nearly his life at the hands of Scabrous Scrotus, the resident Warlord of the refinery-city Gas Town. Fortunately, the deformed, sun-soaked blackfinger, Chumbucket, sees Max as the ordained prophet of his car-based religion, sent from the Angel of Combustion to help build and drive the Magnum Opus - the greatest vehicle the wasteland will ever know.

Torchlight 3 Isn’t Happening Because Dev Is 'Burnt Out'

Torchlight developer Runic Games is making Hob instead of Torchlight 3 for a couple reasons. Most notably, the team is "burnt out," and wanted to make something new. The other reason? Runic has no interest in trying to compete with Blizzard’s Diablo 3.

"We’re just burnt out," Runic Games President Marsh Lefler told IGN when asked why the team made Hob instead of Torchlight 3. "Let’s admit it, Diablo 3 is killing it right now. Diablo 3 is a really fun game. Not that Torchlight 2 isn’t a fun game, it is, but it’s just different. For us to try to compete with Diablo 3? We weren’t trying to compete before."

Lefler added that Diablo and Torchlight were different kinds of action RPGs, and that after a decade of making dungeon-crawlers, "we just needed a little break" to focus on "something we love" that’s even more different.

Disney Infinity Appeals Equally to Male and Female Gamers

The Disney Infinity franchise appeals to both boys and girls at an equal rate. According to a report at The Wall Street Journal, the demographic split for players of Disney's toys-to-life franchise is almost 50/50.

Disney's John Vignocchi told the Journal the demographic split between male and female gamers was initially expected to skew around 70% male and 30% female, but the actual numbers showed an even split.

Vignocchi credited the appeal to young females being attributed to "Disney’s IP treasure chest of powerful and strong female characters."

Final Fantasy Versus 13 Was ’20-25%’ Done Before it Became FF 15

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was roughly a quarter complete before it shifted to become Final Fantasy XV.

Speaking to IGN at PAX in Seattle, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata explained the transition.

“It’s a little bit rough, but in terms of how much it had progressed in terms of development, Versus XIII was around 20 to 25 percent,” Tabata told IGN via translator. “In terms of character designs or visuals, nothing really had been fixed at that point. We were still working on updating it and revising those designs.”

Tabata says that development on Final Fantasy XV started around three years ago, and Versus XIII “was being developed up to the point that XV started development.”

Hob Is the Next Best Thing to a New Zelda Game

Runic Games’ Torchlight series filled the void left by Diablo’s decade-long absence, and it did it well. The Torchlight games weren’t simple copycats of Blizzard’s dungeon-crawling action RPG either — they brought their own amazing ideas to the concept, improving the genre and challenging Blizzard to do better with Diablo 3. Hob, Runic’s next game, seems to serve a similar purpose.

Like Torchlight, Hob is heavily inspired by the outstanding action games many of us grew up on, blending the best of their brilliant ideas into one beautiful, smart, and innovative action-adventure game. While we wait for The Legend of Zelda, Hob could be the next best thing.

Hob’s influences are clear, and developer Runic Games is completely transparent about drawing inspiration from Zelda, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus. The team’s love for large-scale, top-down action-adventure games comes to life in Hob, whose gorgeous 3D world isn’t at all what it seems.

Destiny's The Taken King Will Not Have a Raid on Day One

Destiny’s upcoming The Taken King expansion will not feature the King’s Fall raid on day one of its September 15 launch.

“Its not going to be available on day one,” The Taken King director Luke Smith told IGN during its live show at PAX Prime 2015. “We definitely have a plan for when it’s going to be available. I’m not going to announce the plan for it on the youtube gaming stage.

"But I promise for people who are excited about the raid will know when it's time to take time off work. We’ll give em’ a heads up,” he added.

Bungie previously told IGN that the expansion’s upcoming King's Fall raid is bigger than other Destiny's raids Vault of Glass and Crota’s End. The new expansion introduces Oryx, the father of Crota's End raid boss, Crota. Oryx heads a new class of enemies called the Taken as he seeks to strike revenge for the death of his son.

CD Projekt Red Teases Witcher 3 Gwent News

During a panel at PAX, CD Projekt Red teased upcoming news about Gwent, the card-game found within The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Answering a fan request for a stand-alone version of Gwent during the panel Q&A, senior writer Jakub Szamalek said there will be "good news for Gwent players coming up."

As far as a stand-alone version, Szamalek laughed and said he would pass along the idea to the business team in Warsaw, where CD Projekt Red is based.

A physical version of the card game was part of the Xbox One Collector's Edition, but a digital version of Gwent was part of the game as content within the world of The Witcher 3 on all platforms.

The description of Gwent by CD Projekt Red calls it a game "of initial simplicity and ultimate depth," played by nobles and commoners alike in the Witcher universe.

Witcher 3 and the Challenge of Adapting Books to Games

During a Witcher 3: Wild Hunt panel at PAX, CD Projekt Red talked about the difficulties present in adapting a book series to a game.

"You'd be hard pressed to find book adaptations" in gaming, Szamalek said, contrasting that with the movie world, where book adaptations are commonplace and often times very successful.

One of the challenges Currit mentioned was the fact that often times, "fans are completionists." He said fans will "devour" everything to do with a franchise, making a game adaptation ripe for fan scrutiny.

Homefront: The Revolution Feels Like Far Cry, and That's Awesome

Homefront: The Revolution feels a lot like recent Far Cry games, and honestly, that’s awesome. In a brief, 15 minute hands-on demo with the 2016 shooter, I was pleasantly surprised to find a sandbox packed with interesting things to do, multiple ways to explore, and some smart systems that really helped pull me into the world and keep me there.

My goal was pretty simple – get from point A to point B while trying to not get killed by the patrolling, near-future packs of North Korean soldiers. Aside from standard grunts on the ground, there were drones that patrolled the streets, snipers perched up high forcing me to find alternate routes, and heavy trucks that could tear me down with a machine gun at a moment’s notice. Lucky for me, Homefront gave me the tools to start my own revolution and really even the odds.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Captures the Spirit of Indiana Jones Incredibly

In the span of a 15-minute demo, Rise of the Tomb Raider made me feel the sheer sense of wonder, excitement, and terror of one of the classic Indiana Jones movies (sorry, Shia) better than nearly any game has. I survived a near-death experience (ok…more like a dozen of them), studied ancient murals in hopes of learning a foreign language, got horribly spooked by skeletons and scorpions, and escaped a temple that was simultaneously crumbling as well as flooding.

In short, this Lara Croft is every bit as amazing as Indy ever was.

My hands-on time with Rise began in the sun-baked mountains of Syria. After my driver turned on me, a thing that happened to poor Indy on more than one occasion, I climbed a cliff-side looking for a way inside a long-forgotten tomb. The gorgeous lighting, dynamic wind, and incredible particle effects all immediately worked in tandem to deliver one of the best-looking video game demos I’ve ever played.

Minecraft Vet, Rookie Each Play Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode

From the flint-and-steel activation of a Nether Portal to a notable ubiquity of clucking chickens, Minecraft: Story Mode’s demo seemed deeply invested in conveying the familiar environmental experiences of Minecraft into its narrative. I’m curious how the open slate of Story Mode will ultimately interface with the mostly-mechanical Minecraft world, but from what I saw, Telltale is off to an encouraging start.

I was happy to see that Story Mode will be the first Telltale game to allow players to choose their player avatar. In a nod to Minecraft’s multiplayer character customization, Jesse is rendered in six different models, with three male iterations voiced by Patton Oswalt and the three females by actress Catherine Taber. All six designs seem carefully crafted from the familiar colors and textures of the Minecraft palette, with cleverly Minimal detailing granting each a distinct look.

Here's How Nightfalls Are Changing in Destiny

Destiny: The Taken King creative director Luke Smith has revealed some upcoming changes to the way Destiny Nightfalls work.

The big updates include a Level 40 level requirement, a 30 second time-out penalty for death, and your fireteam wiping no longer returns you to orbit.

Smith wrote about these changes on Bungie's website. "The death penalty of being kicked to orbit often leads to players feeling forced to play too safe, rather than running through the world as a monster killing machine."

Smith added "another thing we didn't like about the Year 1 Nightfall was how players could feel forced to play Nightfall as early as possible in the week to maximize the benefit from the Nightfall buff. So, we've shelved that buff until we can reform it into something closer to its original intent - a mark of prestige for having achieved something challenging. We've adjusted sources of XP and Reputation up to account for its absence."

Disney Infinity 3.0 Review

The “toys-to-life” genre is growing increasingly competitive, but nobody has a better collection of action figures at their disposal than the big kids behind Disney Infinity 3.0. This third entry in the series is the most polished, cohesive, and enjoyable one to date, fusing a rollicking, intergalactic Star Wars campaign with a staggeringly customisable Toy Box mode. In short, it’s an experience that really lives up to its line-up of all-star ingredients.

The Avengers play set included with last year’s game was a disappointment, mainly because it featured one of the most uninspiring video game versions of Manhattan ever made, populated with samey escort missions and rehashed enemy types. Fortunately the Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic play set bundled with Disney Infinity 3.0 rights most of its predecessor’s wrongs. It’s a nicely varied campaign set across multiple planets (and the space between), with diverse mission, environment, and enemy types to keep it feeling fresh over the course of its six hour duration (or substantially longer if you aim to complete all its challenges).

Dishonored Definitive Edition Review

When I reviewed Dishonored back in 2012, I gave it a 9.2 ("Amazing"), concluding that:

“It's a shame that Dishonored's story isn't greater than the sum of its decidedly memorable parts, but its gameplay absolutely is. Each mission is built as an elaborate network of choices for players to explore, and the same can be said for Corvo himself. Each player's selection of powers, perks and other upgrades will inform how they see and interact with this world, and no two play-throughs will be exactly the same. Dishonored is a game you'll talk with your friends about, and that you'll want to play multiple times. In this game there are always other paths to be taken and other challenges to conquer, and that's a refreshing thing indeed.”
