11.22.63: "Other Voices, Other Rooms" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

Coming off a tense but ultimately fillery episode, this week's 11.22.63 got back to the meat of the story and introduced a host of new characters. While Bill made his first appearance last week, his status was bumped up to "sidekick" in "Other Voices, Other Rooms" as he joined Jake in his effort to stop JFK from being assassinated. On the one hand, it was nice having someone for Jake to bounce his thoughts off of and keep the viewer in the loop so that he didn't have to talk to himself or flashback to Al over and over. On the other hand, Bill himself was pretty frustrating as a character and didn't have much chemistry with Jake once they became allies.

Olivia Munn on Psylocke's Future After X-Men: Apocalypse and Why Deadpool Succeeded

Although Olivia Munn is not entirely sure what's next for Psylocke—the character she plays in Marvel's X-Men: Apocalypse—she is excited for fans to see how "strong and lethal" her character is in the upcoming film.

As Munn has previously demonstrated, Psylocke has serious skills with a sword. In fact, the X-Men actress stopped by IGN's office earlier in February to showcase how well she can swing a blade. Speaking to MTV News on the Oscars red carpet, Munn implied lots more of that would be shown in the movie.

Better Call Saul: "Amarillo" Review

Full spoilers for Better Call Saul continue below.

"You and I both know you can do this job. But please, you just have to do it right."

This is the key issue at the heart of "Amarillo," the third episode of Better Call Saul: Season 2 that sees Kim (Rhea Seehorn) not taking lightly to Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) bending the rules to get a win. Jimmy is a person who cuts corners for his own success; he's not afraid to think outside the box to get things done, and when challenged to find a way to make something happen, he usually can. It's just not always the right way.

We see that happen twice in this episode: first, when he solicits people at a senior home on their bus to get their business at Davis & Main, and again when he discards Cliff's (Ed Begley, Jr.) approved ad for a more salacious commercial that he directed. Both times Jimmy's decision gets better feedback and more people for their case, but both times it ultimately backfires.

What Did You Think of Tonight's Supergirl?

Superhero television has a commendable tradition of using actors from previous interpretations as guest stars in the latest iterations, and this week's Supergirl is no different. This time, it's Smallville's Laura Vandervoort that makes a return to the Super-verse as DC Comics' Indigo, a supervillain that can travel through the Internet.

Stay tuned for our full review of "Solitude," but get the conversation started in the comments.

Gotham: "Mr. Freeze" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Exit Theo, Jerome, and Barbara (for now) and enter Victor Fries and Hugo Strange. For the second half of Gotham's second season - titled "Wrath of the Villains."

Oh, sure Tabitha's still around. And Butch. And they've been paired up. He's now the de facto leader of the underworld, drillin' folks with his drill hand just for kicks. And she's looking to partner up again. Using the days she spent torturing him as her psychological foot in the door. Well, that and planting that kiss on him. By the way, Butch has been irreparably tortured and brainwashed twice now, right?

But that's not the headline here. Gotham's all about Mr. Freeze and Hugo Strange now. With my excitement leaning way more into B.D. Wong's Strange than in Nathan Darrow's Freeze. Mostly because Strange has never been portrayed in person before. He's been a big part of animated shows and video games, but Wong's the first actor to play him. And yes, it's odd (almost used "strange") to see Strange on a show like Gotham because of how much we associate him with a boner-fied Batman obsession. Because of his role in the Prey storyline from the comics. But here he is without Batman. As head of Arkham. Ready to coldly inflict his "cures" on the mentally ill. Which, for Penguin surely means a lot of drugs and abuse.

Overwatch: The Shooter You’re Helping to Create

Modern game development can be a very collaborative process. We now live in an age of open and closed betas, where gamers are regularly given the opportunity to play works in progress and help developers make the final product better. Blizzard has very much embraced this approach in recent years, and the development of its new shooter, Overwatch, is another good example.

"I'd say one of the top things that we heard about

was the desire for a new game mode," says game director Jeff Kaplan. "We were, for a long time, experimenting with this Control game mode, and then when the feedback started to bubble up… that people were very interested in seeing more, we accelerated the process and we basically doubled down on it. Originally, the new game mode was going to come in very late: for launch or maybe post-launch. What we did is we said, 'Hey, it's working. We think it's fun. We feel like it's something based on feedback we should get in sooner rather than later.'"

Bravely Second: End Layer Review

A doggedly traditional Japanese RPG in many respects, Bravely Second: End Layer is almost exactly as they used to make them in the old days. If you're of the mind that publisher Square Enix hit its peak during the 90s with the likes of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, then this is very much aimed at you. However, Bravely Second's charming sense of nostalgia can't fully make up for its failings. Whilst its turn-based battles are still engaging, and its art just as visually arresting, it tells a ridiculous and often patronizing story with lifeless, even frequently irritating voice work. It's a game that swings from providing great joy to deep disappointment without any warning and, as such, falls short of the bar set by Bravely Default.

Apple Wins Ruling in New York iPhone Hacking Order

Apple won a New York case over the U.S. government's request to access one of its user's iPhones.

The New York Times reports Magistrate Judge James Orenstein ruled in Apple's favor during a drug case. Said case saw the federal government citing the All Writs Act. The act has been used in the past to acquire data in suspected criminal cases.

This time, however, Orenstein said "none of those factors justifies imposing on Apple the obligation to assist the government's investigation against its will."

The All Writs Act is the very same source of conflict between Apple and the FBI around a domestic terror attack in San Bernardino, California. In that case, the government is also requesting a sort of backdoor-access through Apple security, which goes well beyond the wording of the 1911 act.

These Guys Made The Revenant First

It struck me that four of the movies nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards have all had their stories essentially explored on the big and small screens before.

Let's take The Revenant. Inspired by true events and Michael Punke's novel of the same name, the film chronicles the almost unimaginable ordeal of fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), who was mauled by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his men in the frozen wilderness of 1823 America ... only to survive and then seek his revenge.

Leo won an Oscar for The Revenant as did the film's director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. But you've probably never heard of Man in the Wilderness, a 1971 western that starred the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris, as a fictionalized version of Hugh Glass.

Zootopia Review

Set in a world where animals have evolved and now live much as we do -- yes, we get a little bit of backstory on this alternate universe -- Disney's 55th animated film, Zootopia, centers on Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin), a small town rabbit with dreams of being a police officer, who moves to the city that gives the film its title. While Judy is indeed successful in becoming a cop, notably the first ever rabbit to do so, she's still overlooked by everyone, including Police Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) and assigned to parking duty.

However, when Judy takes it upon herself to begin investigating the latest in a series of local disappearances, she enlists the help (whether he likes it or not) of Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a con artist fox she'd previously encountered. With her job on the line, the two begin to discover the disappearances in Zootopia are tied into a conspiracy and a cover-up involving some disturbing occurrences among the locals…

Travel via teleportation is currently an impossibility seen only in popular science fiction. However, a recent study finds should it ever become a reality, our brains are naturally set up to handle it.

Mega Man's PlayStation outing is a decent platformer marred by some extraneous annoyances. The voice work is atrocious, with characters spouting inane dialogue in cringe-worthy, ridiculous voices. The colorful anime-inspired style looks good in motion but sometimes adds an imprecise measure to the platforming, especially when paired with a slight over-animation in Mega Man's sprite. The backgrounds can clash with the action to the point that everything feels too busy and little inconveniences like lethal projectiles sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

Walking Dead EP Calls Negan "One of the Greatest Villains Ever Created in TV"

Full spoilers for The Walking Dead TV show to date continue below.

Negan is coming, and the characters on The Walking Dead probably aren't ready. During their visit to Hilltop, Rick & Co. clearly viewed the mysterious Negan as no bigger threat than the villains they've faced in the past, but little do they know just how dangerous he actually is.

The Walking Dead comics reader do know, however, and most TV watchers probably have some sense that Negan is a big deal. For those who don't know, executive producer David Alpert is hoping "Knots Untie" sparks some discussions.

"We want

to get into conversations with their friends like, ah, that's nothing, and the friends who have read the comics be like, 'Oh, you just don't know. You just don't know,'" he told IGN with a laugh.

Fallout Shelter Update Adds Crafting

Bethesda's new Fallout Shelter update will introduce crafting to the mobile game.

Along with adding the ability to "turn worthless junk into useful items," Bethesda will also add new rooms for weapon and armor crafting, new outfits, and more pets. New dogs and cats will come with the latest update, as will parrots. Update 1.4 also will add pet bonuses.

The Venture Bros.: "Tanks for Nuthin'" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Venture Bros. has stayed unusually laser-focused this season. Rather than bouncing from one group of characters to the next and slowly building up an overarching conflict, the show is keeping all its attention on Dr. Venture's new corporate empire, Monarch's surprisingly successful new career as a superhero and the Guild's inability to keep both men in line. This more focused approach does have its disadvantages, but it's hard to deny that this season has been one of the most consistently entertaining.

The Monarch and Henchman 21 are quickly becoming the MVPs of the season as they continue their transition from failed archvillains to unwittingly competent vigilantes. The Monarch never seems to succeed on purpose. He dealt a crippling blow to the Venture family when he accidentally crashed the Cocoon on the Venture Compound, and now he's systematically wiping out all his competition completely by accident. This episode cemented his status as the linchpin of the entire season. Thanks to an ongoing comedy of errors and an endless series of coincidences, now everyone believes Dr. Venture is secretly Blue Morpho. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch isn't happy about that, and neither will her colleagues. It's easy to see where the conflict is headed these next few weeks, though no doubt Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick will find ways to escalate matters to even crazier extremes.

Watch Jimmy Kimmel Bust Batman and Superman in 'Deleted Scene'

Sadly for Jimmy Kimmel, his "scene" in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been cut from the final movie.

Co-star of the movie Ben Affleck told Jimmy the reason behind the decision on Kimmel's After The Oscars special, saying "the filmmakers had to make a tough choice," and "the movie was a hair long." Affleck did bring a clip, though, which you can check out below.

Kimmel manages to do what no one else in Gotham has ever done before: reveal Superman and Batman's true identities.

Batman v Superman is set for release in theaters on March 25. A one-off Dawn of Justice prequel comic is coming today if you can't wait that long.

Life Is Strange Developer Takes on Vampires

What has the video game vampire done for us recently? Not a lot, is the answer. Whilst many a bloodsucker has taken pride of place in many a great game over the decades, few examples have managed to define a starring role for themselves within modern gaming culture. Take away Castlevania's Gabriel Belmont, as well as peripheral examples such as Metal Gear Solid's Vamp, Disgaea's Valvatorez or Skyrim's vampire 'disease', and there's not a lot left to sink your teeth into.

This lack of pale skins means one of two things. Either the stage is set for the glorious return of vampirism, or the whole concept has lost its appeal... hence the lack of options. Parisian studio Dontnod, creators of Remember Me and Life is Strange, is, of course, hoping the absence of vampires has made the hearts of the audience grow fonder.

PlayStation TV No Longer on Sale in Japan

PlayStation TV is no longer available in Japan.

NeoGAF commenter noticed the device - which enables you play PlayStation Vita games on your TV - has been discontinued on the official Japanese product page.

The device remains on sale across other territories.

Sony has yet to officially comment on the development, but we have reached out and will update you as and when we receive a response.

In our 2014 PlayStation TV review, we said "as a Remote Play extender for PlayStation 4 owners with fully wired homes or truly outstanding Wi-Fi connections, the PlayStation TV has definite value, and it's much easier than hauling your PS4 around the house and a lot cheaper than buying a second one. But as a standalone device, the PlayStation TV disappoints due to huge gaps in the game compatibility list and missing video apps, as well as poor PlayStation Now performance over Wi-Fi."

HoloLens Development Edition Available for Pre-Order

Microsoft has announced the HoloLens Development Edition is available to pre-order now. Microsoft is seeking a wide range of developers to hop on board and begin creating software for its augmented reality headset and is currently taking applications from Windows Insiders in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada.

HoloLens chief and Windows Apps Studio VP Kudo Tsunoda explained Microsoft is committed to providing the development community with the best experience possible and confirmed the HoloLens Development Edition will ship with all the documentation developers will require and a pile of tutorial videos. Microsoft will also provide a free portfolio of holographic experiences it hopes will illustrate what HoloLens is capable of and inspire developers to create their own 3D content. These experiences include a HoloLens version of Skype and HoloStudio (a program designed to allow people to design in 3D at real-world scale), but also several games. Fragments is a crime drama designed to allow players to investigate crimes that are seemingly occurring in their own living rooms, Young Conker is a platform game that uses rooms in your home as the levels themselves, and RoboRaid is a first-person shooter that will see enemies appearing to crash through the walls of your house.

New Screens for Shenmue 3 Revealed

Yu Suzuki has shared a selection of new screenshots from Shenmue III.

The images were sent out to the 71,000+ Kickstarter backers who have collectively contributed $6.5 million to the Kickstarter and Slacker Backer campaigns, following a presentation at this year's MAGIC (Monaco Anime Game Interview Conferences) show (thanks, Eurogamer).

Unless you are a Kickstarter backer of Shenmue III who shelled out at least $60 in support of the project, you aren't guaranteed a physical copy of the game when it eventually is released. The sequel to Shenmue II followup has found a lot of success through crowdfunding, solidifying its place as one of Kickstarter's top 10 successes.

Bloodborne and Multiplayer: A Surprising Partnership

Bloodborne was one of last year's crowning achievements; a brutal, beautiful experience that challenged players as only From Software's games can. What's so enduring about Bloodborne, however, is just how layered it is. Some of my most memorable moments venturing around Yharnam, for instance, have been driven by leaving the oppressive atmosphere of solo play behind, and venturing into the game's superb spin on multiplayer.

By way of example, I was playing co-op with a friend recently. We had been through a war together, trekking along the DLC, and made it to the final area relatively unscathed - until now it seemed, as another player invaded our game.

A Hunter standing by a pool of blood. Nice spot for a picnic. Scones with strawberry jam anyone?

The Walking Dead: "Knots Untie" Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Thanks to a time jump, last week's Walking Dead opened up the show to new adventures, a brand new kung fu vagrant, and a new romance. This week's installment - "Knots Untie" - pushed the show into even newer territory, refusing to rest on its laurels. And I'm liking the quickened pace of this season's back half.

Rick, and most of the series regulars, left Alexandria to head over to Jesus' compound - a walled, wooded refuge called Hilltop. A place, we'd discover, is the main food provider for a network of communities that have entered into a trading pact. A place that's a little more Colonial Williamsburg than Rick's suburban slice of tract housing.
