A historically valuable lunar rover prototype designed for the Apollo Moon missions was sold to an Alabama junkyard for scrap metal last year.
According to documents acquired by Motherboard, which included reports from NASA's Office of the Inspector General, the rover was located by an US Air Force Historian in early 2014 who spied it in the backyard of his mother's neighbor.
The historian alerted NASA upon the find, however, the rover was sold to the junkyard upon its owner's passing before NASA could recover it. The rover was then reportedly scrapped last December.
